Few retail packaging items are as iconic as Tiffany’s Blue Box. A symbol of elegance, style and admiration, the robin’s egg blue has been making women around the world swoon for generations.

The trademarked Blue Box is as iconic as the Tiffany’s brand itself. In 1845, Charles Lewis Tiffany put out a catalog for his “stationery and fancy goods” store at 259 Broadway in New York City. The shop had been in business just eight years and had made a name for itself by selling fine silver formed in what was called the new American style— a clean, natural look that dared to move away from overly ornate European styles. Once Tiffany’s introduced its diamond engagement ring in 1886, the Blue Box became every bit as desired as the ring itself.

As time went on, the Blue Box became a steadfast figure in Americana, with Paramount Pictures releasing Breakfast at Tiffany’s in 1961, which starred a young Audrey Hepburn. In order to film the movie on location, Tiffany’s opened on a Sunday for the first time but had to bring in 40 armed guards in order to prevent any of the Blue Boxes from “disappearing.” This was perhaps the first time boxes on the movie set were more famous then the actress starring in the film.

Tiffany’s signature blue—officially dubbed as color No. 1837 on the Pantone Matching System chart, evokes “positive thoughts and reactions, and this, combined with the status that Tiffany has assigned to it, makes for perfect packaging,” according to Pantone Color Institute executive director Leatrice Eiseman. The box has even inspired actual pieces of jewelry that Tiffany’s has gone on to sell.

Lets take a look at the famed box and see what makes it so special:

The Box—Pantone makes the blue-coated paper packaging for Tiffany. While the brand’s flagship store sits on bustling Fifth Avenue, New York City, the boxes come from humble Carlstadt, New Jersey, making the box the second most famous thing out of Jersey after Bruce Springsteen.

The Color— The official color of Tiffany’s box is Pantone No. 1837, which is named for the year of the stores founding. Colloquially, it is known as forget-me-not blue or robin’s egg blue. This hue is the most protected color in branding.

The Accent—A white satin ribbon that’s fastened to the box at checkout is the go-to accompaniment to the signature box. During the holidays, a red ribbon is used instead.

The Brand—Tiffany & Co. boxes are embossed with the company name in the font of “Baskerville Old Face.” But in all actuality, the color says all you need to know about the box. Could change be in the works for Tiffany’s and it’s famous retail packaging? According to Vogue UK, Tiffany’s new creative director, Francesca Amfitheatrof, told the September issue that she’s not afraid to make her mark by tweaking the beloved packaging

“I might do limited editions, maybe in a pattern,” she said. “I do love a mixture of patterns.”

It’ll be interesting to see what the future has in store for the iconic Blue Box. It’s amazing how one box and one shade of blue has become such a symbol of elegance and sophistication, and probably will remain that way forever. It goes to show the value of well thought out and well branded packaging.
